This four-week series, Family Dinner, examines meal and food-related passages in Scripture and culminates in a deeper understanding of Jesus’s invitation to “take and eat” the bread and wine as part of our communion practices.
The practice of fasting spans the entire Bible. Moses fasted (Exodus 34:28), Daniel fasted (Daniel 10:3), John the Baptist followed a specific meal plan in his fast (Matthew 3:4), Jesus fasted in the wilderness (Luke 4:1–4), and Acts 13:1–3 explains the fasts practiced by the early church. Fasting not only causes us to go without something, but it also forces us to remember the reason we are going without, keeping that idea in the forefront of our mind each time we intentionally choose to go without.
